An objective comparison of licensing, hosting, customization, and cost structure.
| Dimension | ERPNext | Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing | Fully open source (AGPLv3), built on the Frappe Framework. | Split model: Community edition (open source, LGPLv3) plus paid Enterprise apps and features. |
| Hosting | Self-hosted on your own infrastructure, or Frappe Cloud. | Self-hosted (Community), or Odoo's own hosting (required for some Enterprise apps). |
| Customization approach | Low-code DocType system plus Python/JavaScript scripting across one unified framework. | Module/ORM-based development in Python, plus a no-code Studio app (Enterprise only) for simpler changes. |
| Platform strength | Accounting and manufacturing are native and tightly integrated from day one. | Very broad official app marketplace — sales, website/e-commerce, marketing, and 30+ more apps. |
| Cost structure | No per-user licensing — cost is hosting and implementation only. | Community is free; Enterprise apps are priced per user and per app. |
| Community & ecosystem | Smaller but highly active open-source community around Frappe/ERPNext. | Large global partner network and a very active third-party app marketplace. |
ERPNext tends to be the better fit when full open-source control and no per-user fees matter, and accounting or manufacturing sit at the core of your business. Odoo tends to be the better fit when you need a wide range of ready-made apps (website, marketing, e-commerce) and have budget for Enterprise pricing. Either way, the right call depends on analyzing your actual operations — not the platform alone.
